Bach Vespers

Bach Vespers for Reformation Sunday, 30 October

Don’t miss us on 30 October as City Bach Collective will perform Bach’s magnificent and ever popular Reformation cantata, BWV 80, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God). This special Bach Vespers service for Reformation Sunday takes place at 6.30pm at our regular worship place, church of St Mary at Hill in the City of London. This cantata features a team of three oboes of different sizes and bassoon, playing with and in contrast to the strings to create fabulous textural colours. There will also be lots of other festive music for the occasion, performed on period instruments.

Everyone is welcome, and attendance is free. Do come along and bring your friends. We look forward to seeing you there to share Bach’s wonderful music!

The following Bach Vespers will be on 27 November (BWV 132 for Advent Sunday).

Reflective Discussions

War and Peace: Christian Faith and the Use of Violence

Every year, Christians and other communities in the UK mark the end of WWI with a minute of silence on Remembrance Sunday. Mixed emotions and profound questions often accompany this day: Does such remembering glorify or condemn violence? Is it ever legitimate, or even an obligation, that Christians take up arms and fight? How do we reconcile the conflicting views on pacifism and the use of force we encounter in the Bible, different Christian traditions, and our own congregations?

This year, in the light of the Russia’s war against Ukraine, these questions may be more pressing for us than ever. We want to take time to reflect on them, to learn from each other, share and reconsider our views, and listen to what the Spirit has to tell us for our lives and world today.

In a series of three reflective discussion sessions, we will draw on resources and perspectives from the Christian tradition:

23 October 2022, 12:30-13:30
Session 1: Voices from Scripture

30 October 2022, 12:30-13:30
Session 2: Voices from Church History

6 November 2022, 12:30-13:30
Session 3: Voices from Christian Ethics

13 November 2022, 11:00-12:00
Remembrance Sunday Service

Each session last about one hour and can be attended individually (but the conversation will continue from session to session, so attending all three is ideal). No preparation is required. The sessions take place at St Mary-at-Hill, after St Anne’s Sunday morning service, and our shared reflections will conclude in the writing of the prayers of the people for Remembrance Sunday. The conversations will be facilitated by Sebastian Matzner (LCiGB ordinand).

The Lutheran church now rejects praying to Mary, the child bearer of God and refuses to give her the devotion she deserves. Shame on you!!! Martin Luther believed the theotokis, he honoured Mary and truly believed she was sinless and a perpetual virgin. He left the Catholic Church because of his views on purgatory and indulgences!! Take his name from your church you apostates!!!

Pretty difficult to find and easy to miss as the church is tucked in a narrow lane. I can't review it as a church, but as something to see, the inside and outside are rather shall we say, austere.

A lovely and sweet place. I went there for singing Christmas carols, and you don't need to be religious to love that. The community was very open-minded and welcoming. While on a walk along the Thames riverside, a nice place visit.
